The Bohemians, a dynamic actor-musician theatre company, are thrilled to announce their latest production, The Misadventures of Pinocchio: The Radical Robot Girl!, set to tour across Wales from Llanelli to Cardiff this spring. Formed by Rose Bruford graduates, including Llanelli-born Artistic Director Benji Mowbray, the company is known for its vibrant and politically charged performances that integrate live music seamlessly into their storytelling.
This new production, written by Joel Nash and directed by Benji Mowbray, offers a fresh perspective on the classic tale by Carlo Collodi. Set in a post-apocalyptic Wales, this version is not your typical fairy tale. The story has been transformed into a folk-rock fairy tale that speaks directly to the Greta Thunberg generation, dealing with themes of climate change and the challenges young people face today.
Benji Mowbray, discussing the inspiration behind this adaptation, explains that this isn’t just another Pinocchio story. “We’ve completely reimagined the original to reflect the current global issues. It’s an 80-minute spectacle that combines punk rock, classic musical theatre, and folk melodies into a completely original score,” says Mowbray.
The production also marks a significant homecoming for The Bohemians, who have performed across the UK, from Cornwall to Liverpool. Supported by Theatr Sir Gar, the company has introduced a ‘pay what you can afford’ ticket scheme in Llanelli, making theatre accessible to all families.
The tour promises dazzling magic, puppet-masters, and noses that grow, but with a twist that challenges the audience to think about the world they live in. For more details on the tour and to book tickets, visit The Bohemians Theatre.
