Lyric Hammersmith Theatre and Birmingham Rep have released new production images for their co-production of Marriage Material, currently running at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre until 21 June 2025.

The production will then transfer to Birmingham Rep from 25 June to 5 July 2025.

The cast includes Tommy Belshaw as Jim/Bill, Jaz Singh Deol as Mr Bains/Arjan, Anoushka Deshmukh as Surinder, Celeste Dodwell as Claire/Miss Flanagan, Avita Jay as Mrs Bains, Kiran Landa as Kamaljit, Omar Malik as Ranjit/Tanvir, and Irfan Shamji as Dhanda. Casting is by Jatinder Chera.

Marriage Material is adapted by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti (A Kind of People) from Sathnam Sanghera’s critically acclaimed novel. The production is directed by Iqbal Khan (East is East).

The creative team includes Good Teeth (Set and Costume Design), Simeon Miller (Lighting Design), Holly Khan (Composer and Sound Design), Anjali Mehra (Movement Direction), Anna Wood (Associate Sound Design), Rakhee Sharma (Associate Movement Direction), Gurkiran Kaur (Voice and Dialect Coach), and Harper K Hefferon (Assistant Director).

Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti’s debut play Behsharam broke box office records at Soho and Birmingham Rep. Her follow-up, Behzti, was closed after protests and went on to win the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.

Director Iqbal Khan is Associate Director of Birmingham Rep and Artistic Director of the 2022 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. He has worked extensively with the RSC and across opera and classical music.

Set in Wolverhampton, Marriage Material follows the Bains family and their corner shop, which has been the heart of the family for three generations.

In 1969, Mrs Bains juggles the demands of the shop, her ailing husband, and two daughters with very different dreams.

In the present day, a family tragedy draws Arjan Bains back from London. The shop represents everything he tried to leave behind—but how long can he stay away?
