There’s something undeniably joyful about a musical that knows exactly what its audience wants and delivers it with glittering gusto. Here & Now, the new jukebox musical packed with Steps’ greatest hits, is currently lighting up New Wimbledon Theatre as part of its UK Tour with a vibrant, feel-good production that’s as colourful as a confetti cannon and twice as loud.
Set in the seaside superstore Better Best Bargains, the story follows a group of colleagues whose Friday night shift turns unexpectedly dramatic. Caz, played with warmth and wit by Rebecca Lock, uncovers secrets that threaten to derail the summer of love she and her friends had hoped for. But with a soundtrack of pop bangers and a cast full of charm, this musical never lets the drama overshadow the fun.
Shaun Kitchener’s book is cheeky and heartfelt, weaving Steps’ iconic songs into the narrative with clever flair. From Tragedy to Stomp, each number lands with nostalgic delight, thanks to Matt Spencer-Smith’s punchy musical arrangements and a cast that knows how to sell a chorus.
Jacqui Dubois brings sass and soul to Vel, while Blake Patrick Anderson’s Robbie is a comic highlight. River Medway, as Jem, is a scene-stealer with charisma to spare, and Lauren Woolf and Ben Darcy make a sweet pairing as Tracey and Ben.
Director Rachel Kavanaugh keeps the pace brisk and the tone light, allowing the choreography by Olivier Award-winner Matt Cole to shine. The dance numbers are slick and playful, often erupting from the shop floor in a burst of sequins and synchronised steps. Tom Rogers’ set design transforms the superstore into a glittering playground, while Gabriella Slade’s costumes are a riot of colour and sparkle.
There’s no denying that Here & Now is built for fans of Steps, but even those less familiar with the band’s discography will find plenty to enjoy. It’s a musical that celebrates friendship, resilience and the joy of letting loose.
Here & Now proves itself a crowd-pleaser that knows how to throw a party. It’s bright, bold and brimming with fun.
