New images have been released for the West End production of Shadowlands, directed by Rachel Kavanaugh, now running at London’s Aldwych Theatre until 9 May 2026.
Hugh Bonneville stars as C.S. Lewis, portraying the celebrated author whose carefully ordered academic world changes when he meets American poet Joy Davidman, played by Maggie Siff.
The cast also includes Jeff Rawle as Warnie, Tony Jayawardena as Rev. Harry Harrington and Timothy Watson as Professor Christopher Riley. They are joined by Rebecca Blackstone, Nigel Fyfe, Jemma Geanaus, Sharan Phull, Leighton Pugh, Fode Simbo, Ernest Stroud and Giles Taylor.
Ayrton English, Nathan Jago and Louis Wilkins will alternate as Douglas, Joy Davidman’s young son.
The production explores a story that begins with an intellectual connection and evolves into a profound journey of love and the delicate nature of life.
Written by William Nicholson, Shadowlands originated as Nicholson’s BAFTA Award-winning TV movie before becoming a West End success, later transferring to Broadway and winning a Tony Award. The story was adapted into a 1993 feature film directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger.
This new staging is presented by Jonathan Church Theatre Productions, Trafalgar Theatre Productions and Tilted, with design by Peter McKintosh, lighting by Howard Harrison, sound by Fergus O’Hare and casting by Annelie Powell CDG and Jim Carnahan. It was originally produced by Chichester Festival Theatre.
