The upcoming State of the Nation conference, co-hosted by An Tobar and Mull Theatre, Citizens Theatre, and Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland, has officially sold out following overwhelming demand.

Taking place on Friday 24 October 2025 at Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, the event aims to address the challenges facing Scotland’s arts sector and foster strategic collaboration among theatre organisations.

In response to the sell-out, organisers have doubled the event’s capacity to accommodate more attendees. The conference is designed to support those impacted by the Multi-Year Funding process, offering a space for shared learning and collective action.

Rebecca Atkinson-Lord, Artistic Director of An Tobar and Mull Theatre, said:
“The fact that State of the Nation has sold out so quickly is a powerful signal that our sector is ready for change. There’s a real hunger for connection, solidarity and strategic action—and this event is a step towards reclaiming our collective power. Anyone working in Scottish theatre whose work is affected by the Multi-Year Funding process is welcome—this space is for all of us.”

The programme will focus on three key areas: resource sharing, advocacy and lobbying, and future planning. Breakout sessions will cater to both organisations and freelancers, ensuring tailored discussions for all participants.

Key organisations attending include A Play, A Pie and A Pint, Beacon Arts Centre, Eden Court, Traverse Theatre, National Theatre of Scotland, Tron Theatre, and many more.

The event is not a roundtable discussion but a dynamic space for reassessing collective power and shaping a more sustainable future for the arts in Scotland.
