Rebel Sparks has announced the national tour of Take Flight, a new multi-sensory aerial theatre show created for babies aged 0–2 and their adults.
The production follows a mother and baby bird as they explore the world together, with two performers taking to colourful silks to tell an uplifting story of early independence, friendship and discovery.
Developed in collaboration with developmental psychologist Dr Valentina Sclafani, the show is designed to support babies’ neurological and motor skills while strengthening bonds between babies and their grown-ups.
Relaxed performances allow babies to move, make noise and be fed or changed, and each show is followed by a stay-and-play session where families can explore the set and props, including the aerial silks.
Director Ria Ashcroft said, “I’m absolutely thrilled to be able to bring Take Flight to so many new audiences across the country. I’m really excited to be able to share this beautiful show with so many babies and their grownups. I worked with a superb team of with incredible creatives, feminists and academics to create the show. The whole show has been designed with babies at the heart of it, from the first seeds of the idea to co creating with babies in the rehearsal room. As a mother myself I wanted to create a show that feels like soft warm hug, a sanctuary for the babies and grownups, to create a moment of calm, comedy, silliness and bonding. The show reflects and captures the chaotic mayhem of the madness and beauty of this time.”
Rebel Sparks, formerly The Gramophones, are a Nottingham-based company known for creating theatre centred on female and non-binary characters. Their previous productions include Aidy the Awesome, Tarzanna and Another Planet.
The touring production is supported by Arts Council England, Circus Hub, Curve and Lakeside Arts.
