Melting Pot and Birmingham Rep have announced that actor and comedian Mathew Horne will lead the cast of The Battle, a new comedy by John Niven, directed by Matthew Dunster.
Horne, best known for his role in Gavin and Stacey, will play Andy Ross, the music executive at the heart of the infamous Britpop chart war between Blur and Oasis.
The production opens at Birmingham Rep on Wednesday 11th February 2026, launching a major UK tour ahead of a West End run.
The Battle is a darkly funny and blistering look at the cultural clashes of 1990s Britain, offering a satirical take on the rivalry that defined a generation.
Mathew Horne said:
“This play is right in the sweet spot of my teenage cultural experience. I’m thrilled to be exploring this iconic era in music on stage with such a talented creative team involved.”
Horne will appear in the role of Andy Ross until Saturday 30th May 2026.
Written by screenwriter and Sunday Times bestselling author John Niven (Kill Your Friends, The Second Coming), The Battle marks his stage debut. The play draws on Niven’s insider knowledge of the music industry to deliver a razor-sharp script.
Director Matthew Dunster (2:22 A Ghost Story, The Pillowman) brings his acclaimed theatrical vision to the production, supported by a creative team including Fly Davis (Set & Costume), Jessica Hung Han Yun (Lighting), Ian Dickinson (Sound), Tal Rosner (Video), and Claire Bleasdale (Casting).
Set in London, 1995, The Battle captures the chaos of the Brit Awards and the media-fuelled feud between two of the UK’s biggest bands. It’s a story of fame, ego, and the power of pop culture.
Expect filthy language, unforgettable personalities, and a wickedly funny dive into one of music’s greatest rivalries.
