The UK’s leading improv comedy collective, The Free Association, will officially open its first permanent venue in Southwark, South London, on Thursday 16th October 2025.
This landmark move follows the company’s 10th anniversary celebrations in 2024 and marks a bold new chapter for the organisation.
Founded in 2015, The Free Association has become the beating heart of UK improv, with a reputation for sold-out shows, a thriving training programme, and a roster of alumni that includes Ambika Mod, Phil Wang, Olga Koch, and Ritu Arya.
Hollywood star Bryce Dallas Howard even attended a workshop while preparing for her role in Deep Cover, Prime Video’s latest comedy release.
The new venue, located just three minutes from Southwark tube station, places The Free Association in the heart of London’s theatre district, alongside The National Theatre, The Globe, and the Young and Old Vic.
It will feature a purpose-built theatre, classroom space for its renowned improv school, and a public bar and café, creating a vibrant hub for performers and audiences alike.
“This move has been such a long time in the making for us, so we’re unbelievably thrilled to finally open our own theatre with our name on it,” said founder Graham Dickson. “We hope to make it a home to be proud of – not just for improv, but for the whole comedy community.”
Jonny Collis-Scurll, co-owner of The Free Association, added: “Our community of performers and students have long deserved a venue of this calibre, and I can’t wait to showcase them in our new home!”
Ryan Dench, also a co-owner, said: “This new home is about building on that spark of belonging and shared laughter. I’m so incredibly proud of everyone who’s been part of this adventure so far, and excited for what comes next.”
Comedian and actress Liz Kingsman commented: “It has been a privilege to be a part of The Free Association since they opened their doors over ten years ago. It is incredibly exciting to finally have a destination for the ever-growing improv community, and to safeguard the general public from the dangers of having improvisers on the streets.”
The venue’s opening weekend will feature a packed programme of shows, including This Doesn’t Leave The Room, Fabled: The Improvised Fantasy Adventure, and Nana’s Kitchen, among others.
