The sell-out political drama The Gang of Three will return to the stage this autumn, ahead of a major UK tour following its critically acclaimed run at London’s King’s Head Theatre.
Written by Robert Khan and Tom Salinsky, the production will first be revived at the King’s Head Theatre before officially opening at Richmond Theatre from 13 to 17 October.
The tour will then visit Oxford Playhouse, Cambridge Arts Theatre, Chichester Minerva Theatre and Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre.
Directed by Kirsty Patrick Ward, the production sees original cast members Alan Cox, Hywel Morgan and Colin Tierney reprise their roles as Tony Crosland, Roy Jenkins and Denis Healey.
Set during the turbulent Labour leadership contest of 1976, the play explores a moment when cabinet rivals battled for power against a backdrop of economic crisis and political division.
The story follows three towering political figures as they navigate ambition, loyalty and rivalry behind the closed doors of Westminster.
Writers Robert Khan and Tom Salinsky said: “We wrote this play about the 1970s and 1980s. By the time we finished it, we realised we’d written it about now. ‘A Labour government, economic shocks, falling poll ratings and a Cabinet full of ambitious people who can’t agree on anything, with old friends suddenly becoming bitter rivals. Roy Jenkins, Denis Healey and Tony Crosland would feel completely at home. ‘But while the politics may feel familiar, the play is really about something timeless: ambition, rivalry, friendship and power. We’re thrilled that audiences across the UK will now get the chance to see it.’”
Described as funny, fierce and razor-sharp, the production brings to life the personalities and clashes that helped shape modern Britain.
