Southwark Playhouse Young Ensemble will present a major revival of The Trials by Dawn King, running from Thursday 28 to Saturday 30 August 2025 at Southwark Playhouse Borough.
Directed by Vicky Moran, this powerful and provocative play explores themes of climate justice and generational accountability. Originally staged at the Donmar Warehouse in 2022, The Trials returns with a fresh cast of emerging talent from South London.
The production features set and costume design by Natalie Johnson, lighting and video projection by Will Monks, and sound design by Fergus Carver.
The cast includes Anne-Elizabeth Sowah, Dominique Vincent, Emma Judge, Evie Desheva, Harry Japes, Josie Surminski, Nina Amos, Rachel Greenwood, Rowan Miller, Scarlett Molyneux, Syam Stewart and Thea Walcott Mckay.
Set in the near future, The Trials sees a jury of young people judging the older generation for their inaction on climate change. As they deliberate, the line between justice and revenge begins to blur.
David Workman, Southwark Playhouse’s Head of Participation, said:
“Throughout its existence, Southwark Playhouse has been committed to providing opportunities for young people to have really tangible opportunities to perform on our stages. Many have gone on to much greater success, and the Young Ensemble is a sign of our ongoing commitment to nurturing emerging talent. This Company will receive four months of opportunities working with a range of theatre professionals to develop their performance skills and provide a launchpad for whatever may come next.”
Southwark Playhouse Young Ensemble is a new initiative for performers aged 19–25, offering free, high-quality training and performance opportunities.
The production is supported by The Backstage Trust, The Garfield Weston Foundation, and The Christina Smith Foundation.
