The Tower Theatre in Stoke Newington will present a new production of My Night with Reg to mark LGBTQ+ History Month this February.
Opening on 25 February, the play follows a close knit group of gay friends whose lives are shaped by love, desire and the ever present memory of the elusive Reg.
Set in 1980s London, the story explores friendship and heartbreak during the height of the AIDS crisis, offering an intimate look at the complexities of queer life in a changing world.
The play, written by Kevin Elyot, won the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 1994 and later transferred to the West End before being adapted for television.
Director Dan Usztan said: “My Night with Reg is a classic of the queer theatre canon, and to be directing it as a queer director during LGBTQ+ History Month with a queer cast is the icing on the cake! Kevin Elyot’s masterpiece, written thirty years ago during the AIDS crisis and focussing on the tangled webs of gay friendship groups, has lost none of its wit, sparkle and edge. This year’s LGBTQ+ History Month focuses on science and innovation – so to look at this play again, with such advances around AIDS treatment and prevention, shines a light on the bravery and resilience that so many men shouldered, and also the shame they faced from governments who wouldn’t let them live. My Night with Reg will have you laughing and crying in equal measure – bring your friends and a box of tissues.”
My Night with Reg will run for eleven performances from 25 February to 7 March at the Tower Theatre. Tickets are priced £9 to £15, with half price tickets available on opening night.
