A border-busting theatre festival for citizens of everywhere
With less than six months to go before the UK leaves the EU, Voila! Europe is a London-based festival proudly pushing back against the notion that we are a nation in retreat from our neighbours across the channel. Voila! Europe boasts a multilingual, multicultural, multidisciplinary lineup of theatre from around Europe and the UK, with an impressive roster of over 200 artists presenting 36 shows over 12 days, in four venues across the capital. This year’s event also sees the addition of Voila! Crossroads – a festival hub for performers, creatives and attendees at Broadgate’s Theatre Deli. The venue will also host the European Theatre Forum – a weekend of workshops, panels and performances focussing on how we can transcend political, cultural and linguistic borders…
Programmed with a passion for exploring and expanding the idea of being European beyond nationalistic stereotypes, this year’s festival includes a show by Polish and Nigerian artists combining theatre styles from their countries, a real-life couple describing their fight to stay in the UK despite Indian and German citizenships, a solo show charting the life of a Jewish Lebanese British gay man, and more. There are shows themed around robots and new technology, European vs village identities, Europe-wide LGBTQ stories, witchcraft and mysticism, coming of age pieces and stories of growing old. Styles run from animation to masks, comedy to circus, dance, cabaret and drama.
