West End LIVE marked its 21st anniversary with huge crowds gathering in Trafalgar Square for a weekend of performances from some of the biggest shows in theatre.

More than 70,000 people attended across Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June, as Europe’s largest free musical theatre festival returned to the capital.

Hailed as “Glastonbury for theatre lovers”, the event featured over 60 performances from leading West End productions and beyond.

Shows ranged from long-running favourites including Les Misérables, Mamma Mia! and Oliver! to newer productions such as the Olivier Award-winning Paddington The Musical, Into The Woods and the yet-to-open Sinatra The Musical.

Audiences were also treated to performances from English National Opera and Showstopper! The Improvised Musical, adding to a diverse and vibrant line-up.

The square and surrounding streets filled early on both days, with fans braving temperatures in the high twenties to celebrate London’s theatre scene.

Presenters for the weekend included Mathilde Barker, Shanay Holmes and Tobias Turley on Saturday, and Courtney Bowman and Tosh Wanogho-Maud on Sunday.

Since its launch in 2005, West End LIVE has grown into a major moment in the theatre calendar, drawing fans from across the UK and around the world.

Cllr Paul Swaddle said “West End LIVE is a curtain raiser for the capital and a showcase for the creative industries which support around 80,000 jobs in London.

“People travel from across the world to attend West End LIVE. It is a springboard for tourism with visitors heading into the West End to enjoy our galleries, museums, bars and restaurants.

“In this 21st year it was great to once more put on this jewel in this creative crown with the Society of London Theatre and many generous sponsors. With a stellar line-up, once again it proved essential viewing for fans of West End theatre.”

Emma D’Souza MBE said “Each year, West End LIVE showcases the incredible breadth and quality of theatre on offer in the West End and beyond, and this year’s line-up has been one of our most exciting yet. From the multi-Olivier Award-winning Paddington The Musical to brand-new productions yet to open, including Sinatra The Musical and One Day, alongside many of the West End’s best-loved favourites, audiences have been delighted by the weekend’s spectacular performances.

“West End LIVE would not be possible without Westminster City Council, our sponsors, and all of the shows involved – we are incredibly grateful for their ongoing partnership and support.”

West End LIVE is presented by Official London Theatre and Westminster City Council, with support from a wide range of partners across the theatre industry.
