Handiwork Productions will present the world premiere of Bloody Mary and the Nine Day Queen, a new musical by Gareth Hides with Anna Unwin, at London’s Union Theatre this October.

Directed by Adam Stone, the musical explores the lives of two Tudor queens—Mary I, known as “Bloody Mary,” and her 17-year-old cousin, Lady Jane Grey—during a time of political and religious upheaval.

Set in the aftermath of Henry VIII’s death, with the young King Edward VI on the throne, the story unfolds against the backdrop of a power struggle led by the ambitious Duke of Northumberland.

This original musical delves into themes of family, faith, and identity, asking profound questions: “What are you living for? And what would you be willing to die for?”

The production is described as serious in tone but laced with moments of humour, offering a fresh and accessible take on a lesser-known chapter of Tudor history.
