Choreographer Sung Im Her returns with 1 Degree Celsius, a powerful new dance production that explores the urgent realities of climate change through movement, sound, and light.
Following record-breaking heatwaves in both the UK and South Korea, 1 Degree Celsius uses rising temperature data as the foundation for its sound and lighting design. Seven dancers, dressed in clothes they no longer wear, trace paths inspired by city skylines, reflecting on consumerism and convenience culture.
The score, created by Belgian collaborator Husk Husk, is artistically inspired by atmospheric temperature data. Lighting design by Young Uk Lee doubles as set design, reducing material waste while visually representing the earth’s rising heat.
Sung Im Her said, “Through this work I hope that audiences feel the urgency of climate change. However, my work is also about finding strength and optimism within ourselves despite the challenges we face. I want people to leave the theatre with a positive outlook and for it to spark conversations about our children’s futures that we often find difficult to have.”
Born in South Korea, Sung Im Her studied contemporary dance at Hansung University before moving to Brussels to train at P.A.R.T.S. Her work often reflects societal expectations and values, challenging audiences to reconsider their perspectives.
The UK tour includes performances at The Lowry (4 November), Southbank Centre (6 November), and FABRIC at Crescent Theatre, Birmingham (8 November). The Southbank Centre performance is part of KUNSTY, a new performance series celebrating radical and uncategorisable art.
Running time is approximately 50 minutes, and the show is suitable for ages 8 and up.
