The Coronet Theatre will present the UK premiere of Berliner Ensemble’s production of De Profundis, Oscar Wilde’s searing reflection on love, suffering and identity, from 2 to 7 October 2026.
Directed by Berliner Ensemble Artistic Director Oliver Reese and performed by award-winning German actor Jens Harzer, the production brings Wilde’s celebrated prison letter to London audiences for a limited run, with a press night on 2 October.
Written during Wilde’s imprisonment following his conviction in 1895, De Profundis was addressed to his estranged lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, and remains one of the writer’s most personal and revealing works.
The letter explores Wilde’s experiences of incarceration, his views on art, religion and society, and his reflections on love, loss and personal transformation after his public downfall.
Described by Die Welt as “A sensational, unforgettable solo performance”, the production places Wilde’s words centre stage in a powerful theatrical interpretation by one of Germany’s most celebrated actors.
The production is presented in German with English surtitles and is designed by Hansjörg Hartung, with costume design by Elina Schnizler, music by Jörg Gollasch and lighting design by Steffen Heinke. The German translation is by Mirko Bonné.
Running approximately one hour and 50 minutes without an interval, the production is recommended for ages 14+ and contains blackouts and graphic depictions of self-harm.
De Profundis will be performed at The Coronet Theatre from Friday 2 to Wednesday 7 October 2026, excluding Monday 5 October.
