Colin Ingram, alongside Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, has announced that stage and screen star Brian Conley will return to the role of Doc Brown for the UK tour of Back to the Future The Musical when it plays Milton Keynes Theatre from 9 to 27 February 2027.
Conley previously won acclaim for his performance as the eccentric scientist in the musical’s West End run at London’s Adelphi Theatre. He will star opposite Australian performer Axel Duffy, who reprises the role of Marty McFly after originating the character in the Australian production.
Brian Conley said, “There’s something incredibly special about taking this production on the road and sharing the magic, and I’m looking forward to bringing it to Milton Keynes Theatre – it’s always wonderful to perform there. Whether you’re seeing BACK TO THE FUTURE The Musical for the first time or returning for another ride, I promise you’re in for 1.21 gigawatts of fun. Great Scott! I can’t wait to fire up the DeLorean again!”
Conley’s extensive musical theatre career includes performances in 9 to 5 The Musical, Hairspray, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Jolson and Me and My Girl. His television credits include The Grimleys, The Brian Conley Show and EastEnders, where he recently appeared as Tom ‘Rocky’ Cotton.
Duffy, meanwhile, originated the role of Marty McFly in Australia and has also appeared in productions including Oklahoma, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Grease The Musical.
The announcement forms part of the first-ever UK tour of Back to the Future The Musical, which launches at Bristol Hippodrome in October 2026 before visiting Edinburgh, Liverpool, Birmingham, Sunderland, Bradford, Southampton, Manchester, Plymouth and Cardiff, with further dates still to be announced.
Roger Bart, who originated the role of Doc Brown in the Manchester, West End, Broadway and Sydney productions, will play the character in Bristol and Edinburgh before further casting announcements are made for later tour venues.
Based on the beloved 1985 film, Back to the Future The Musical features a book by Bob Gale, new music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, and includes hit songs from the film such as “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode”.
The production has become a global phenomenon, with productions running across North America, Japan, Germany and aboard Royal Caribbean Cruises. Since its premiere, the musical has been seen by more than five million people worldwide. Its West End run concluded in April 2026 after five record-breaking years at the Adelphi Theatre, where it was seen by more than 2.3 million people.
The musical is directed by Tony Award winner John Rando, with choreography by Chris Bailey, set and costume design by Tim Hatley, illusions by Chris Fisher, lighting design by Tim Lutkin and Hugh Vanstone, sound design by Gareth Owen and video design by Finn Ross.
