The cast has been announced for the Stephen Joseph Theatre’s upcoming production of Handbagged, Moira Buffini’s Olivier Award-winning comedy.
Playing at the Scarborough venue from 31 July to 29 August, the production features Pandora Clifford, Liz Garland, Alexandra Mathie, Deven Modha, Simon Darwen and Meriel Scholfield.
Handbagged imagines the conversations that took place behind closed palace doors between Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher during their weekly meetings.
Spanning 1979 to 1990, the play explores the relationship between the monarch and her most powerful subject, asking whether they ever found common ground or if their famously reserved demeanours prevailed.
Director Hannah Tyrrell-Pinder said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be directing Handbagged at the SJT this summer, working with this brilliant company of actors to bring to life some of the most prominent figures from recent history. Presenting Handbagged in the round is so exciting, engaging in an immediate dialogue with our audience, and bringing them face to face with two of the most powerful women of the 20th century.”
The creative team includes designer Katie Scott, lighting designer Charly Dunford and sound designer and composer Lee Affen, with movement direction by Aiden Crawford and casting by Annelie Powell CDG CSA.
Following its run in Scarborough, the production will tour to Theatr Clwyd, where it plays from 15 to 26 September.
