Cast announced for UK concert premiere of I Dream at The Other Palace

New musical inspired by the civil rights movement plays one-day-only concert performances in April

Casting has been announced for the UK concert premiere of the new musical I Dream, which will be staged at The Other Palace on Monday 27 April.

Due to demand, the concert will now be presented at both 3pm and 7.30pm, with tickets currently on sale.

I Dream follows civil rights leader Ralph Abernathy at the end of his life as he reflects on his lifelong friendship with Dr Martin Luther King Jr, set against a contemporary score infused with gospel, jazz, blues and soul.

       

The cast includes Chrissie Bhima, Wendy Mae Brown, Rhiane Drummond, Michael Duke, Carl Ellis, Emilie Louise Israel, Cal-I Jonel, Alexia Khadime, Jenay Naima, Wayne Robinson, Obioma Ugoala and Rodney Vubya.

Bhima appears as Bria, with Brown playing Mother and Grandma, and Alexia Khadime starring as Coretta.

Polka Theatre announces cast for The Rapping Princess and reveals May half-term programme

Obioma Ugoala takes on the role of Ralph Abernathy, with Michael Duke appearing as Martin.

The creative team features music and lyrics by Douglas Tappin, a book by Douglas Tappin and Jonathan Payne, and orchestrations by Carl Marsh and Keith Williams.

The concert is directed by Annabel Mutale Reed, with music direction by Keith Williams and casting by Heather Basten CDG CSA.

Lighting design is by Holly Ellis, sound design by Daniel Hunt, with Livi van Warmelo as Associate Musical Director and Kieran Donovan as Assistant Director.

       

Originally premiered in Atlanta in 2010, I Dream has since been presented in concert at the Kennedy Center and performed in opera houses across the USA, before further musical development through 2023 and 2024.

This London concert marks the first time the work will be presented to UK audiences.
