London City Ballet’s Artistic Director, Christopher Marney, has been announced as Artist in Residence at the prestigious Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York this autumn.
As part of Mikhail Baryshnikov’s Fall Curation Series, Marney will lead the revival of Jerome Robbins’ rarely performed 1986 ballet, Quiet City.
The production will be staged by Robert LaFosse, an original cast member and former New York City Ballet star. Using Robbins’ original notes and rehearsal footage from 40 years ago, the ballet will be meticulously reconstructed in New York before making its UK premiere.
Performances of Quiet City will take place this November at the Linbury Theatre, where London City Ballet will appear as a guest company of the Royal Ballet and Opera.
The cast will include London City Ballet dancers Alejandro Virelles, Arthur Wille, and Joseph Taylor—only the third cast in history to perform this work.
Mikhail Baryshnikov commented:
“This is an exciting project for all the dancers involved and for Baryshnikov Arts. We are thrilled to host London City Ballet while they revive Quiet City by my dear late friend Jerome Robbins.”
Christopher Marney added:
“There could not be a better place to explore undiscovered works from prominent US Choreographers than at the centre of New York’s dance scene. Mikhail Baryshnikov continues to shape the landscape for dance, providing a sanctuary for artists to develop and research their craft. With his rich history and knowledge of eminent 20th century Choreographers it seems in perfect alignment with the ballets I am keen to restore.”
This announcement follows a string of accolades for London City Ballet, including winning Best Independent Company at the National Dance Awards, and nominations from the UK Theatre Awards and DanceEurope.
In addition to Quiet City, the company is currently touring the UK and Europe with a mixed programme, beginning in Blackpool on 12 July.
