A new adaptation of The Yellow Wallpaper arrives at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, combining dance, theatre and psychological drama to reimagine Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s influential short story.
Directed and choreographed by Caitlin Ort, with Broadway performer Megan Ort in the central role, the production follows Jane, a woman confined to a room during treatment for “female hysteria”. Denied stimulation or creative expression, her attention turns to the wallpaper, whose patterns begin to shift and distort.
As her isolation intensifies, the wallpaper appears to reveal figures trapped within it, leading Jane towards a growing obsession and a desperate attempt to intervene. The production explores the thin line between perception and reality as her sense of self begins to fragment.
Presented by an ensemble cast, the show blends movement, text and music to create an atmospheric and immersive experience. This interpretation places particular focus on themes of control, autonomy and the ways care can be used to mask harm.
The Yellow Wallpaper runs at Greenside @ George Street from 07 – 29 August at 16:05. Tickets are on sale here
