Finding a Fringe show that your kids will genuinely love, and that won’t have you regularly checking your watch, can be tricky. But The Greatest Magic Show at Assembly Gardens does a pretty good job of nailing it. This high-energy hour has all the chaos and wonder a family could ask for, with plenty of clever touches to keep grown-ups entertained too.
Before you even step inside the tent, the magic begins. The ushers hand out little magicians’ wands to the kids in the queue, setting the tone perfectly and making sure they feel part of the show from the start. Once inside, the talented trio — Sam Hume, Justin Williams, and Magnus Danger Magnus as the flamboyant Ringmaster — hit the stage running, and that energy never falters once throughout the show.
The tricks range from silly slapstick to impressive, theatrical set pieces, all perfectly timed to keep little ones hooked. The show has a good amount of interaction with the audience too, and throughout the performance, children are invited up to help with the magic, hold props, or join in the gags. For them, it’s their moment in the spotlight. For the rest of us, it’s pure joy to watch.
The underpants sketch is a real highlight. It’s loud, silly, and gets almost everyone shouting at the performers gleefully.
One small note for parents of very young children: in some sections at the start, the sound does get excessively loud. My own toddler found this overwhelming, so if your little one is under three or quite sensitive to loud noise, it’s worth packing some ear defenders just in case.
Overall, The Greatest Magic Show has a good, well-produced structure to it, and on the whole, I’d say the hour passes by at a decent pace. And then there’s the finale, which is so beautifully done it actually caught me by surprise. Without spoiling it, this closing moment delivers a strong and truly uplifting message to young audiences about believing in themselves and chasing their dreams. It’s heartfelt without being heavy-handed, and it’s the kind of thing that sticks with you long after you leave.
In short, The Greatest Magic Show is a family gem at this Fringe. It’s a production that delights children, entertains adults, and sends everyone out smiling. If you’re heading to the Fringe with kids in tow, this one’s a very safe bet.
