The Understudy makes its UK premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, offering a darkly comic look at ambition, insecurity and life behind the scenes.
Written and performed by Eva Seymour, the one-woman show follows an actor navigating the unpredictable world of understudying. Drawing on her own experiences, Seymour portrays a wide range of characters as she charts the pressures, frustrations and sacrifices that come with waiting for a moment in the spotlight.
As the boundaries between performer and performance begin to blur, the production explores the emotional cost of striving to remain visible in an industry that often overlooks its performers. Through sharp transitions and inventive staging, the show builds a portrait of a character caught between determination and self-doubt.
Seymour said, “The play is also working against her… forcing her to question her choices… she feels she’s forced to, because of the promise… of some greater success.”
The Understudy runs at Assembly George Square Gardens from 05 – 31 August at 12:15. Tickets are on sale here
