A single chair and a small drawer unit are all Nathan Jonathan needs to transport us back to 2002 in They’re Just Small Town (Northern) Lads at Summerhall. Dressed in a white vest and tracksuit, Jonathan takes to the stage as a 12 year old boy growing up on a rough estate, immediately drawing the audience into a story that feels deeply personal while also striking a universal chord.
Life at home is far from easy. An abusive father casts a long shadow over childhood, and when his mum decides to move them to a small Northern town, it offers the promise of a fresh start. There, he forms a friendship with Ryan, and together they navigate the familiar rites of teenage life. There are attempts to fit in, moments of rebellion and the constant pressure to prove themselves in a world that seems to have very fixed ideas about what a boy should be.
At its heart, They’re Just Small Town (Northern) Lads is an exploration of masculinity. Not the loud, headline grabbing conversations that often dominate public debate, but the quieter realities of growing up surrounded by expectations. The unwritten rules of being a “proper man” are ever present, whether they come from family, friends or the wider community.
Jonathan’s writing debut is an accomplished one. The script has a natural, conversational quality that makes it easy to connect with, balancing humour and nostalgia with some genuinely affecting moments. There is a warmth to the storytelling that prevents the heavier themes from becoming overwhelming, while still allowing them the space they deserve.
The performance itself is equally impressive. Much of the show is delivered directly to the audience, creating an intimacy that suits the material perfectly. Jonathan has an easy presence on stage and a knack for making even the smallest memories feel vivid and engaging. It often feels less like watching a theatre performance and more like listening to a friend recount stories from their childhood.
There are moments where the narrative could dig a little deeper into some of the issues it raises, and occasionally it feels as though certain strands are resolved a touch too neatly. Even so, the show remains consistently engaging throughout its hour.
Funny, thoughtful and often moving, They’re Just Small Town (Northern) Lads is a confident and promising piece of new writing. By looking back at one young boy’s coming of age story, Nathan Jonathan shines a light on the experiences that shape so many young men, and asks important questions about who gets to define masculinity in the first place.
