Optimistic: Elizabeth Holmes offers audiences a deep dive into the tumultuous life of one of the tech world’s most polarising figures. Writer, director, and lead performer Sarah Deller embodies the controversial Elizabeth Holmes through the use of real transcripts, texts, and documents in a portrayal that, while ambitious, sometimes trips over the threads of its own narrative.

From the outset, Deller commits fully to the role, painting Holmes with a full spectrum of emotions that range from unwavering confidence to moments of sheer vulnerability, tracking her rise to success and fall from grace. Every nuance, every gesture, is meticulously crafted, making it clear that Deller has plumbed the depths of Holmes’ character.

The production further captivates with its inventive use of staging and props, using simple furniture to reflect and signpost the emotions of a revolving door of voices and characters from Holmes’ life. This visual storytelling amplifies the emotional flow of the play, drawing audiences into Holmes’ steadily unravelling world.

However, for all its strengths, Optimistic: Elizabeth Holmes is not without its pitfalls. The portrayal of Holmes’ story feels at times muddled, navigating an already complex true story in ways that occasionally leave the audience grappling for clarity. The interplay of fact, interpretation, and dramatisation sometimes blends too freely, making certain scenes feel unnecessarily convoluted.

What’s more, while the frenetic energy of Holmes that spirals into panic as the pressure piles on is well-presented, the same performance when paired with lengthy scientific explanations leaves more questions than answers for the audience.

Yet, despite these hiccups, the production remains anchored by the sheer professionalism and poise with which it’s delivered. Sarah Deller’s unwavering dedication shines through, turning Optimistic: Elizabeth Holmes into a memorable theatrical experience. While it may not offer the most lucid retelling of Holmes’ saga, it certainly showcases Deller’s prowess as a multifaceted actor and ensures her a commendable spot in the theatrical limelight.
