First look production images have been released for The Karate Kid – The Musical as the UK tour gets underway following its opening performances.
The musical began previews at New Wimbledon Theatre on Tuesday 28 April, marking the UK premiere of the stage adaptation of the classic 1984 film.
Written by Robert Mark Kamen, screenwriter of the original movie, with music and lyrics by Drew Gasparini, the production brings the much-loved story of Daniel LaRusso and Mr Miyagi to the stage through music, movement and dynamic storytelling.
The story follows Daniel as he learns that karate is not about fighting, but about balance, dignity and respect, guided by the mentorship of Mr Miyagi.
The musical previously received its world premiere in St Louis in 2022, playing to sold-out houses and strong audience and critical response.
Speaking about the show’s long journey to the stage, writer Robert Mark Kamen said: “William Goldman said about Hollywood ‘No one knows anything.’ He was right. Who knew that 43 years after I wrote the original script for THE KARATE KID, we would see these very same characters acting and singing on the British stage in a story that is as fresh and universally relevant as it was four decades ago.”
The production is directed by Amon Miyamoto, with choreography by Keone and Mari Madrid and a Tony Award-winning design team.
Scenic design is by Derek McLane, costume design by Ayako Maeda, lighting design by Bradley King, sound design by Kai Harada and projection design by Peter Nigrini.
The UK tour continues through venues including Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Oxford, Milton Keynes, Glasgow, Sheffield, Sunderland, Birmingham and Cardiff, running until Saturday 1 August 2026.
