New rehearsal images have been released for the world premiere stage adaptation of Patrick Hamilton’s Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky, adapted by Simon Reade and directed by Matthew Iliffe, ahead of its run at Southwark Playhouse Borough this September.
The newly released photographs offer a first look at the company in rehearsal for the production, which is based on Hamilton’s acclaimed trilogy and follows three lonely Londoners navigating desire, obsession and the search for connection in late 1920s London.
The cast includes Yanexi Enriquez as Jenny Maple, Rosalind Lailey as Ella Dawson and Jordan Scowen as Bob, alongside Michael Maloney as Ernest Eccles, Alex Bhat as George Perry and Lucy Gray in multiple roles.
Matthew Iliffe directs the production, with design by Ellie Wintour, lighting by Alex Musgrave, sound and composition by Elizabeth Purnell, movement by Sam Spencer-Lane and intimacy direction by Jess Tucker Boyd.
Set around the seedy Midnight Bell pub in 1929 London, the story centres on barman Bob, barmaid Ella and prostitute Jenny Maple, whose intertwined lives form the heart of Hamilton’s darkly comic and deeply moving portrait of urban loneliness.
Adapted by Simon Reade, the production marks the world premiere of a new stage version of one of Hamilton’s best-known works. The novel trilogy was previously adapted for BBC Four in 2005.
Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky runs at Southwark Playhouse Borough from 10 September to 17 October 2026, with an official press night on 16 September.
