Arcola Theatre has announced the full programme for the 2026 Grimeborn Opera Festival, which returns for its 19th year from Wednesday 15 July to Saturday 5 September.
This year’s festival is shaped by themes of environmental urgency, political tension and women’s perspectives, with work that explores the modern world through daring storytelling and adventurous staging.
Artistic Director Mehmet Ergen said: “Grimeborn has always championed opera that feels immediate and alive. In our 19th year, we are proud to present a programme that not only re-examines the canon but expands it.”
Across eight weeks, audiences can experience 13 operas spanning new writing, adaptations of contemporary texts and radical interpretations of baroque and classical masterpieces.
Highlights include Lisa Logan’s After My Breath and William Gardner’s Eden 2.0, a double bill confronting questions of climate responsibility, and Tuluğ Tırpan’s Lowest of the Low, adapted from Günter Wallraff’s landmark exposé of migrant exploitation.
New perspectives from women creators and characters run throughout the season, including Ned Rorem’s Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters, Madeleine Dring’s Cupboard Love, and the immersive Bitter Visions: By Order of Hildegard, inspired by Hildegard von Bingen’s Ordo Virtutum.
Classical works are given inventive new life, with Handel’s Rinaldo and Giulio Cesare in Egitto staged with fresh political resonance, while Mozart’s Così fan tutte and The Magic Flute return in productions infused with wit, physicality and contemporary insight.
Executive Producer Leyla Nazli said: “Grimeborn allows for opera to be taken off the pedestal, continuing Arcola’s legacy of opera for all and championing social relevance alongside high artistry.”
Offering accessible ticket prices from £15 to £39, the festival continues Arcola Theatre’s commitment to widening access and embracing the experimental, the intimate and the provocative in opera today.
