Interview: Mary Rose on Indestructible at Omnibus Theatre

“It's a really provocative and thought-provoking piece that will get people thinking and challenging their assumptions and beliefs. I imagine there will be some interesting conversations in the bar afterwards!”

Mary Rose stars in Indestructible written and directed by the company’s Artistic Director Mary Swan.

Mary Swan directs Danny Charles (Christian), Paul Huntley-Thomas (Robin) and Mary Rose (Catherine) in this highly visual production incorporating AI imagery, projections and original music into Proteus’ distinctive physical style.

Indestructible will première at Omnibus Theatre on 18 January 2024 and will run until 3 February 2024, with previews from 16 January.

You’re starring in Proteus Theatre’s Indestructible, how would you describe the play?

A fast-paced drama, with some laugh out loud moments. The play explores the complexity of human relationships while asking serious questions about culture and accountability.

What was it about the script that made you want to be part of the production?

The exciting thing about this piece (and working with Proteus) is that the script has been devised over a period of time with the actors. It’s a real collaboration with the Director and the wider creative team. We initially started looking at ideas and themes for the play around two years ago!

Review: Slippery at Omnibus Theatre

You’re playing Catherine Shaw, what do you love about the character?

She’s complex and flawed, spiky and opinionated. Her art is how she makes sense of the world. She’s also fiercely loyal and has a great sense of humour.

And what do you think you’ll find most challenging?

All the characters go on quite a journey. Focus is key as the scales constantly tip; the power shifts all the time.

How well do you think the play explores what it means to be a feminist and women as artists?

It’s a really provocative and thought-provoking piece that will get people thinking and challenging their assumptions and beliefs. I imagine there will be some interesting conversations in the bar afterwards!

What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see Indestructible?

Be prepared for a rollercoaster ride full of highs and lows. It should keep you pondering long after you’ve left the theatre…
