Michael Benz

Michael Benz has joined the cast of the European première of Paul Grellong’s Power of Sail, directed by Dominic Dromgoole.

Michael joins Julian Ovenden (Charles Nichols), Tanya Franks (Amy), Katie Bernstein (Maggie), Georgia Landers (Quinn) Giles Terera (Baxter) and Paul Rider (Frank).

This production – co-produced with Daryl Roth who previously collaborated with the Menier on the critically acclaimed production of Indecent – opens on 28 March, with previews from the 20 March, and runs until 12 May.

You’re joining the cast of Power of Sail at the Menier Chocolate Factory, what can you tell us about this play?

Power of Sail is a moral and political thriller. It’s clever, sharp, it’s current, it’s funny, and it’s chilling.

What was it about Paul Grellong’s script that made you keen to be part of the production?

Paul’s writing is so deeply intelligent and specific. It’s a dream for an actor. All the characters are so beautifully nuanced and multi-layered. I knew I wanted to play Lucas the moment I read the script.

You’re playing Lucas, what do you like most about this ambitious grad student?

Lucas is a deeply complicated character. Like all the characters in the play, he’s full of surprises. As an actor that’s very intriguing and I knew I wanted to tackle the role.

And what do you think will be the biggest challenge for you with the role?

The wit and speed with which these character communicate to each other will be a challenge – but a great challenge for an actor.

How do you think a more intimate space, like the Menier, will help tell this story?

The intimate space for the Menier will help with the claustrophobic nature of a college campus – a campus that is erupting in social and cultural changes.

What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see Power of Sail?

It’s a 90 minute roller coaster ride. It’s exhilarating and you’ll be surprised by where it goes. You won’t regret it.
