The John Godber Company will present Wolf Country, a new comedy blending Yorkshire folklore, friendship and the supernatural, at Wilton’s Music Hall from 25 to 27 January 2027.

Written and produced by Elizabeth Godber and directed by BAFTA award-winning writer Jane Thornton, the production combines dark humour, paranormal mystery and an original Country Western score.

Set in a small Yorkshire town, Wolf Country follows best friends Alice and Eddy as rumours spread about a werewolf allegedly roaming the area. While Eddy dismisses the stories, Alice becomes increasingly drawn into local conspiracies after meeting self-proclaimed werewolf expert Connor.

Inspired by the 18th-century East Yorkshire werewolf legend ‘Old Stinker’, the play draws on reported sightings and historical werewolf hunts documented in local newspapers, bringing a unique piece of regional folklore to the stage.

The cast includes Jo Patmore as Alice, Jade Farnill as Eddy and Emilio Encinoso-Gil as Connor. Farnill and Encinoso-Gil are members of The Godber Theatre Foundation, the charitable initiative established by The John Godber Company to support young people from underprivileged backgrounds in Hull and East Yorkshire pursuing careers in theatre.

Speaking about the new work, writer Elizabeth Godber said: “I have always been interested in writing theatre that sits within the world of both reality and the supernatural, especially in the genre of comedy. I knew I wanted to write a play about living with Generalised Anxiety Disorder, a condition I myself have, but in a way that felt humorous and unique. Having grown up loving TV shows like ‘The X-Files’ and ‘Supernatural’ it felt natural to place the story as a type of ‘monster of the week’ episode, but with a deeper narrative of mental health within that”.

Best known for previous works including the UK Theatre Award-nominated The Comedy of Errors (More or Less), Elizabeth Godber’s latest play explores the blurred boundary between the supernatural and the mind while celebrating the folklore of East Yorkshire.
