A bold new comedy-drama is set to take the stage at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre this September. Kailey, written and produced by Kerry Wright, will be performed for one night only on Tuesday 23 September at 7.45pm.
The play follows 18-year-old Kailey Spence as she navigates life alone after her mum, Shaz, is sent to prison. With adulthood thrust upon her, Kailey faces the challenges of her first job, her own place, and big nights out — all while grappling with the absence of parental support.
Inspired by Wright’s own lived experience, Kailey shines a light on society’s forgotten young people. It’s funny, searingly honest, and unapologetically direct. As Wright puts it, “It doesn’t ask for sympathy; it demands you look closer.”
The cast includes Hannah Mullen, Faye Weerasinghe, and Jeanette Percival. The production is directed and dramaturged by Tess Seddon, with Chantell Walker as associate director. Design is by Lu Herbert, lighting by Jessie Addinall, and sound by Sonum Batra. Madi Omatesone serves as costume associate, and Caitlin Clarke as lighting associate.
Kailey is produced by Double Jacket Arts and New Wolf Productions and will be performed in The McCarthy auditorium. The show runs for approximately one hour with no interval and carries an age guidance of 14+ due to strong language and mature themes.
