The hills around Pitlochry Festival Theatre will once again come alive with the sound of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved musical The Sound of Music, returning from 14 November to 21 December 2025.

CATS Award-winning and Olivier Award-nominated actor Kirsty Findlay will reprise her acclaimed role as Maria Rainer, joined by Ali Watt as Captain Georg von Trapp in this revival of Elizabeth Newman’s celebrated production.

Directed by Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s Associate Director Sam Hardie, the production marks a festive highlight in the venue’s winter season. Hardie previously directed Grease and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical at Pitlochry.

Kirsty Findlay, known for her Olivier-nominated performance in Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour, captivated audiences in Pitlochry’s 2024 summer season with her award-winning portrayal of Carole King. She also appeared in Footloose and Sense and Sensibility, and recently starred alongside Brian Cox in Make it Happen.

Ali Watt returns to the venue following roles in The Crucible, Summer Holiday, and The Wind in the Willows. His recent screen credits include Disney+’s Andor and the BBC’s Lucy Worsley Investigates: William The Conqueror, in which he played the title role.

Kirsty Findlay said:

“I’m thrilled to be returning to Pitlochry to play Maria in The Sound of Music. This show holds an incredibly special place in my heart, and I can’t wait to explore the story and the music even more and uncover new layers along the way.”

Ali Watt added:

“I’m thrilled to be returning to Pitlochry Festival Theatre this Christmas as Captain von Trapp. The wonderful audience reaction last year made it clear just how much this story means to people, and it’s a genuine privilege to help bring its warmth, magic and message to the stage once more. I’m especially excited to be working again alongside so many incredible returning cast members and young actors, as well as all the brilliant new additions to the team.”

Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Oscar-winning film adaptation, The Sound of Music remains one of the world’s most cherished musicals. With iconic songs like Climb Ev’ry Mountain, Do-Re-Mi, and My Favorite Things, the story follows Maria, a postulant who brings music and joy to the von Trapp household amidst the rise of Nazism in Austria.

Full casting will be announced in the coming weeks.
