Lead casting has been announced for the return of The Harder They Come at Stratford East, where the critically acclaimed reggae musical will play from 16 May to 4 July 2026.
The production returns following a sold-out run last year, with tickets now on sale for the summer revival.
Based on the cult Jamaican film produced and directed by Perry Henzell and co-written with Trevor Rhone, The Harder They Come tells the story of Ivan, an aspiring singer determined to make it as a music superstar on his own terms in Kingston, Jamaica.
The stage adaptation is by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Suzan-Lori Parks and is directed by Olivier Award-winner Matthew Xia.
Natey Jones will reprise his role as Ivan, while Madeline Charlemagne returns as Elsa until 6 June.
From 8 June, the role of Elsa will be taken over by Chanice Alexander-Burnett, with further casting still to be announced.
Director Matthew Xia said, “I’m delighted that Natey Jones and Madeline Charlemagne are returning to Stratford East as Ivan and Elsa in The Harder They Come, and that Chanice Alexander-Burnett will be stepping up to play Elsa from 8 June.
“There’s something rare about bringing a show like this back to the building where it belongs. This is a piece that lives in the exchange between the stage and audience – a summer reggae party driven by Jimmy Cliff’s music, the energy of this fantastic company, and the people in the room with us each night.”
The musical follows Ivan’s rise from hopeful musician to chart-topping outlaw after he is exploited by a ruthless music industry and pushed into defiance against systemic injustice.
This revival features a soundtrack combining classic reggae tracks with new material, including songs by Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker and Toots and the Maytals, alongside brand new songs written by Suzan-Lori Parks.
