Ceridwen Theatre Company’s Monarchs Anonymous heads to The Other Palace this June, serving up a fast-paced historical farce that reimagines some of history’s most powerful figures in a group therapy session.
Running from Tuesday 23 June to Sunday 28 June, with a press night on Wednesday 24 June at 8pm, the production blends sharp comedy with moments of heart as kings, queens and cultural icons confront their pasts.
At the centre of the drama is viral historian Dr Kat Marchant, known for her YouTube channel Reading the Past, who takes on the role of therapist Dr Thompson as she attempts to manage an increasingly chaotic room.
The ensemble cast includes William Harry Mitchell as Henry VIII, Harriet Sharmini Smithers as Sophia Duleep Singh, George Eggay as Mansa Musa and Joshua Poole as Charles II, with Helena Devereux and Nadia Devereux sharing the role of Marie Antoinette.
Co-written by Nadia Devereux, Joshua Poole and Lyon Devereux, the show began life as an online lockdown project before evolving into a full stage production.
Joshua Poole said, “Monarchs Anonymous started as a lockdown project on YouTube and has grown to a fully-fledged stage show thanks to Ceridwen Theatre Company. We have tried to bring these famous and important historical figures into a new light through the medium of modern therapy. It is often said that you can’t judge the past with today’s standards – well we can and we have! With a few surprises, beautiful costumes and incredible pace the show does just this. Bringing history kicking and screaming into our world. Enjoy!”
Packed with audience interaction and quick wit, Monarchs Anonymous promises to challenge perceptions of historical figures while delivering high-energy entertainment.
