A gripping new version of Virginia Woolf’s radical masterpiece Mrs Dalloway is set to tour venues across England following its world premiere at Storyhouse in Chester.

The immersive reimagining has been co-created by award-winning director Jen Heyes and Olivier Award-winning writer and performer Kit Green, who also takes on the role of Clarissa Dalloway alongside a host of other characters in this contemporary adaptation.

The story unfolds across a single extraordinary day as lives intertwine and themes of identity, memory and loss rise to the surface. At its heart stands Clarissa Dalloway, vibrant and complex, as Woolf’s century-old novel is brought into the present with fresh cinematic flair.

Funny and moving, this new production celebrates life, love, survival and the fleeting moments that shape who we are.

A co-production between Storyhouse, Harlow Playhouse and CutToTheChase Productions, the show premieres at Storyhouse from 29 May to 6 June.

It then travels to Harlow Playhouse on 10 and 11 June, before a run at London’s historic Wilton’s Music Hall from 16 to 20 June. The final tour dates take place at HOME Manchester from 24 to 26 September.

Tickets for all venues are on sale now.

Jen Heyes is known for her cinematic approach to theatre, with previous work recognised internationally across stage and screen. Her credits include Truth to Power Café, HEDDA, Epstein: The Man Who Made The Beatles, Blood Wedding and Tony Teardrop.

Kit Green’s wide-ranging artistic career spans theatre, cabaret, comedy and broadcast. Green is an Olivier Award winner and has created acclaimed works including Prurience, Office Party, Music Hall Monster and The Home. Recent projects include The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions, Sex Strike, Entertain Us and The Law of Mayhem, alongside the release of their second solo album Four Letter Words.

Suzie Henderson, Creative Director at Storyhouse said: “Sharing more of our fantastic homegrown productions with audiences outside Chester is part of a wider long-term vision for Storyhouse so I’m absolutely delighted to announce the tour dates for this electrifying new version of Virginia Woolf’s landmark radical masterpiece Mrs Dalloway.

“Jen Heyes and Kit Green have created a wonderfully visceral theatrical reimagining of Woolf’s profound and thought-provoking creation, and I know it will thrill and move audiences in Harlow, London and Manchester – as well as here in Chester – in the same way the original novel did when it was published 100 years ago.”

Jen Heyes, Director said: “I wanted audiences to step inside Woolf’s world and see it in a way they won’t expect. We’ve mixed theatre, film, and bold reinterpretations to create something alive, surprising, moving, and entertaining. My hope is that people leave the theatre carrying the story with them long after the lights go down.”
