imitating the dog will premiere their new production Remember Romeo at The Dukes in Lancaster this March before embarking on a UK and international tour.
The show, created by Pete Brooks, Andrew Quick and Simon Wainwright, opens on 3 March 2027, with a press performance scheduled for 5 March 2027.
Described as an innovative blend of theatre and film, Remember Romeo intertwines Shakespeare’s classic tragedy with a contemporary story exploring ageing, memory loss and enduring love.
The production centres on a man and woman in their seventies who reunite after more than three decades apart.
As they reconnect in a northern flat, fragments of their shared past begin to surface, including memories of when they played Romeo and Juliet in a 1965 television adaptation and fell in love.
Using live performance, projection and film, the story unfolds across two timelines, juxtaposing a stylised noir retelling of Shakespeare’s play with an intimate portrait of later life.
As their memories blur and resurface, the couple are forced to confront both the passion of their youth and the realities of the present.
Andrew Quick said: “What excites us about Remember Romeo is that it brings together two love stories separated by more than half a century. One is a version of Shakespeare’s great tragedy; the other is the story of two people looking back on a relationship that never quite found its ending.
“As memories begin to fade, remembering becomes an act of reconstruction. This new show asks what remains of us when the past starts to slip away, and whether it is possible to reclaim something that seemed lost forever. At its heart, Remember Romeo is a story about love, memory and the traces we leave behind in one another.”
The production continues imitating the dog’s exploration of the relationship between digital technology and live performance, following their acclaimed adaptation of War Of The Worlds.
Remember Romeo will tour to venues including Liverpool Playhouse, Belgrade Theatre in Coventry, Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield and Derby Theatre, before international performances in Switzerland.
The creative team includes set and costume designer Abby Clarke, lighting designer Andrew Crofts, sound designer James Hamilton and casting director Ellie Collyer-Bristow.
