York Theatre Royal has announced that Amelia Bullmore will return to the stage to lead a major UK revival of The Penelopiad, directed by Creative Director Juliet Forster.
The production, adapted by Margaret Atwood from her acclaimed novella, will run from 10 to 31 October 2026, with performances now extended due to demand and a press night set for 14 October.
Bullmore will take on the role of Penelope, marking her first stage appearance since Circle Mirror Transformation in 2018.
The Penelopiad offers a bold feminist retelling of Homer’s The Odyssey, giving voice to Penelope and her chorus of maids as they reclaim their story from beyond the underworld.
Amelia Bullmore said, “I’m thrilled I’m going to be working at York Theatre Royal – such a beautiful theatre – on this fantastic play. The Penelopiad manages to be funny, dark, moving and provocative by turns. And it’s Margaret Atwood so the writing is uniquely brilliant. I think audiences will love how playful it is and how directly it connects with them.”
Juliet Forster added, “It is wonderful to have Amelia on board to lead the cast for The Penelopiad. Penelope is such a fascinating and complex character in Margaret Atwood’s retelling and I know Amelia will do her justice! I can’t wait to work with her to bring this compelling story to the stage for York audiences.”
The story revisits the myth of Odysseus through Penelope’s eyes, exploring themes of injustice, betrayal and revenge as she reflects on the years spent waiting for her husband’s return.
Originally premiered by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2007, this production marks the first major UK revival of The Penelopiad since its debut.
The creative team also includes casting director Ellie Collyer-Bristow, with further casting to be announced.
