Initial casting has been announced for the first ever UK tour of Back to the Future The Musical, with Tony Award-winning star Roger Bart set to reprise his acclaimed performance as Doc Brown.

Bart, who originated the role in the West End, on Broadway and in international productions, will open the tour at Bristol Hippodrome from 8 October to 21 November 2026, before appearing at Edinburgh Playhouse from 2 December 2026 to 2 January 2027.

He will be joined by Australian rising star Axel Duffy, who reprises his role as Marty McFly following his success in the Australian production.

Producer Colin Ingram said, “We’re thrilled to welcome back stage and screen star Roger Bart to the Delorean in Bristol and Edinburgh after creating the role of Doc Brown in the West End production and playing it in Sydney and on Broadway where he was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance; Roger has a gift of musical comedy acting that is up there with Nathan Lane and Martin Short.”

He added, “At the same time, we can’t wait to introduce Axel Duffy who wowed audiences playing Marty McFly in Sydney. Back to the Future is one of the most technically ambitious productions to ever tour the UK and Ireland, combining groundbreaking stagecraft, spectacular effects and beloved storytelling on a scale rarely seen on the road. Finding performers who can not only meet those demands but also capture the spirit of these legendary characters is essential – the audiences are in for something special!”

Based on the iconic film trilogy, the musical features a book by Bob Gale and music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, alongside classic songs including The Power of Love and Johnny B. Goode.

Directed by John Rando, the production features a multi award-winning creative team including designer Tim Hatley, choreographer Chris Bailey and illusionist Chris Fisher.

Following its record-breaking five-year run in the West End, where it was seen by over 2.3 million people, the musical has become a global success with productions across North America, Japan and Europe.

The UK tour will continue beyond Bristol and Edinburgh, visiting Liverpool, Milton Keynes, Birmingham, Sunderland, Bradford, Southampton, Manchester, Plymouth and Cardiff through to November 2027.

Further casting for Doc Brown at later venues and the full company is to be announced.
