This summer, Pitlochry Festival Theatre will present a brand-new production of Patrick Barlow’s Olivier and Tony Award-winning adaptation of The 39 Steps, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its first staging.
Running from 11 July to 26 September, this fast-paced, physical comedy is based on Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film and John Buchan’s original novel. The production promises a thrilling blend of espionage, intrigue, and slapstick humour.
The 39 Steps follows the dashing Richard Hannay, who finds himself framed for murder after a mysterious woman is found dead in his apartment. On the run and pursued by a shadowy organisation, Hannay must clear his name and uncover the truth behind “The 39 Steps.”
With just four actors playing over 150 roles, audiences can expect lightning-fast costume changes, inventive staging, and a whirlwind of theatricality.
The cast includes Chris Coxon (Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, Pitlochry Festival Theatre; The Wizard of Oz, Watermill Theatre), Stephanie Cremona (Cinderella, A Christmas Carol, Dundee Rep), Blythe Jandoo (Gypsy, The Maggie Wall, Pitlochry Festival Theatre), and Alexander Service (Heathers, Soho Place, West End/UK Tour/The Other Palace, London).
Director Ben Occhipinti said:
“Directing The 39 Steps for Pitlochry Festival Theatre audiences will be an exhilarating challenge. I can’t wait to bring this classic story to the stage with a truly exciting cast and creative team. This play is a love letter to classic cinema and the boundless creativity of the stage.”
The production coincides with Alfred Hitchcock’s birthday on 13 August and pays homage to the Scottish landscapes featured in various film adaptations, including Edinburgh, Stirling, and Dumfries & Galloway.
The 39 Steps is supported by Katharine Liston and presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd on behalf of Samuel French Ltd.
