The New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme will stage the world premiere of The Grand Babylon Hotel, a new adaptation of Arnold Bennett’s only thriller, this autumn.
Running from Saturday 13 September to Saturday 4 October 2025, the production is adapted by award-winning playwright Deborah McAndrew and directed by UK Theatre Award nominee Conrad Nelson.
This stylish comedy thriller marks the first time Bennett’s 1902 novel has been adapted for the stage and forms part of Stoke-on-Trent’s centenary celebrations.
Produced in association with Claybody Theatre, The Grand Babylon Hotel continues the New Vic’s commitment to celebrating Bennett’s literary legacy, following acclaimed productions of The Card (2023) and Anna of The Five Towns (2017).
Arnold Bennett, born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1867, is best known for his vivid depictions of life in the Potteries. While his novels such as The Old Wives’ Tale and Anna of The Five Towns are steeped in local realism, The Grand Babylon Hotel ventures into the glamorous world of high society and espionage.
This new stage adaptation blends satire, mystery and comedy, drawing inspiration from classic spy thrillers like The 39 Steps.
The story follows Nella Racksole, whose wealthy American father buys a grand hotel to fulfil her birthday wish—only to uncover a world of kidnapping, secrets and royal intrigue.
Deborah McAndrew said:
“I have been itching to adapt Arnold Bennett’s The Grand Babylon Hotel for ages, and I’m delighted to be doing it in the city’s Centenary year. It’s a fast-paced story, with vivid, likeable characters, plenty of good jokes, and lots of twists and turns along the way. I’m really looking forward to seeing it come to life.”
The production features a five-strong cast playing multiple roles, promising a fast-paced, character-rich theatrical experience.
