The iconic 1980s movie The Karate Kid is set to hit the stage in a brand-new musical adaptation, launching a major UK tour from April 2026.

Written by Robert Mark Kamen, the screenwriter of the original 1984 film, and featuring music and lyrics by Drew Gasparini, The Karate Kid – The Musical will open at New Wimbledon Theatre on Tuesday 28 April 2026. The tour will visit Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Oxford, Milton Keynes, Glasgow, Sheffield, Sunderland, Birmingham and Cardiff, running until Saturday 1 August 2026.

The original film, starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita, became a cultural phenomenon and spawned a global franchise including sequels, a remake, and the hit Netflix series Cobra Kai. The musical adaptation received its world premiere in St. Louis in 2022 to sold-out audiences and critical acclaim.

Bringing the legendary story to life on stage, the musical reimagines Daniel LaRusso’s journey through movement, music, and raw storytelling. At its heart is the bond between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi, who teaches that karate is about balance, dignity, and respect.

A Tony Award-winning design team transforms iconic cinematic moments into an emotionally charged stage experience. The production celebrates resilience, mentorship, and the quiet strength that bridges generations.

Writer and creator Robert Mark Kamen said:
“William Goldman said about Hollywood ‘No one knows anything.’ He was right. Who knew that 43 years after I wrote the original script for The Karate Kid, we would see these very same characters acting and singing on the British stage in a story that is as fresh and universally relevant as it was four decades ago.”

Directed by Amon Miyamoto, with choreography by Keone and Mari Madrid, the creative team also includes Derek McLane (scenic design), Ayako Maeda (costume design), Bradley King (lighting design), Kai Harada (sound design), Peter Nigrini (projection design), John Clancy (orchestrations), Andrew Resnick (music supervision and arrangements), and Tommy Kurzman (wigs and hair design).

Casting will be announced at a later date.
