The Law of Mayhem Brings Groundbreaking Trans History to the Stage at The Haymarket, Basingstoke

Proteus Theatre presents The Law of Mayhem, a powerful new play from acclaimed trans writer Tabby Lamb, exploring the extraordinary true story of Michael Dillon and Roberta Cowell—the first individuals in the UK to undergo gender-affirming surgery.

The production runs at The Haymarket, Basingstoke from 18–20 September, with a press night on Friday 19 September at 7.30pm.

Performed by a majority trans and non-binary cast, The Law of Mayhem blends magical realism and aerial circus to tell the story of two pioneers whose lives intersected in 1949 and changed the course of history.

Michael Dillon, a research scientist turned Merchant Navy doctor, and Roberta Cowell, a Spitfire pilot and motor-racing enthusiast, were introduced through Dillon’s groundbreaking book Self: A Study in Ethics and Endocrinology.

Their meeting led to a historic medical collaboration with surgeon Sir Harold Gillies, who found a legal loophole in the Law of Mayhem to complete Roberta’s surgery—initiated by Michael himself.

Writer Tabby Lamb said, “Michael and Roberta are icons who have come to represent a lot to the trans community. This play endeavors to get beyond the headlines and the ‘firsts’ and interrogate what they truly meant to each other, and how neither could have changed the course of history alone. At a time when trans rights are so up for debate, it’s been so interesting diving into a point in our history when we were anonymous and our medicalisation had only just begun. On a personal note, exploring their journeys leading up to, during and after their bottom surgery, whilst I wait on endless NHS waiting lists for my own, has indeed been eye opening.”

Directed by Jo Tyabji with creative direction from Mary Swan, the production features scenography by Miriam Nabarro, lighting by Jodie Underwood, sound by Mwen, and movement direction by Daniela Essart.

To accompany the show, Proteus is developing a free digital resource in collaboration with historians and researchers, spotlighting the lives of Dillon and Cowell and their place in British trans history.

Tabby Lamb is known for her award-winning play Happy Meal and recently became the first trans woman to have a play performed at Shakespeare’s Globe with A Grievance of Witches. She is also the founder of Theatre Queers and a vocal advocate for trans rights.

The Law of Mayhem continues Proteus Theatre’s legacy of bold, innovative storytelling that places the audience at the heart of the experience.
