Theatre Peckham launches free augmented reality scavenger hunt to mark 40th anniversary

Theatre Peckham will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a free augmented reality scavenger hunt transforming Peckham, Camberwell and Southwark into a playable digital experience this summer.

Created in partnership with immersive technology company Replayar, the initiative blends theatre, storytelling and augmented reality, encouraging participants to explore local streets and landmarks while uncovering the theatre’s history.

Using a live digital map, players can collect 40 virtual tokens hidden across the area, each unlocking archive photographs, videos and behind-the-scenes content from Theatre Peckham’s four decades at the heart of South London life.

The experience is designed to be fully location-based, meaning participants must physically visit each site to unlock content and progress through the adventure.

Dr Suzann McLean MBE, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of Theatre Peckham, said: “For 40 years, Theatre Peckham has been shaped by the people, stories and places around it. We wanted to find a way to celebrate that history while also looking to the future. This experience allows people to discover Theatre Peckham’s story by exploring the neighbourhood that helped create it. In this adventure, there are no rewards for staying at home and no virtual shortcuts. To unlock the experience, participants must physically visit locations across Peckham, Camberwell and Southwark, encouraging real-world exploration, discovery and connection. Players can only unlock the experience by showing up, exploring their community and sharing the journey with others.”

Jay Huddy, Co-Founder of Replayar, added: “Replayar is deeply honoured to partner with such a remarkable cultural institution, and to introduce new generations to Theatre Peckham through immersive augmented reality. Turning the streets of Peckham into a living map celebrating 40 years of creativity and community has been a labour of love and we can’t wait for people to step outside and discover Theatre Peckham’s story where it actually lives.”

The scavenger hunt forms part of Theatre Peckham’s wider anniversary celebrations under the theme Your Stage, Your Story, Your Theatre Peckham.

The experience will launch alongside the theatre’s 40th anniversary Academy Showcases, which highlight the creativity of local children and young people.

Participants can access the experience on 27 June, 3 and 4 July by visiting Theatre Peckham and downloading the Replayar app.
