The UK stage premiere of The Name by 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature winner Jon Fosse will open at the White Bear Theatre this May.

Translated by Gregory Motton and directed by Simon Usher, the production runs from Tuesday 19 May to Saturday 6 June, with a press night on Thursday 21 May at 7.30pm.

Set in a family home by the sea, The Name begins with a pregnant young woman sitting alone before her partner and relatives gradually arrive.

What should be a simple family gathering becomes something more unsettling as questions circle, silences deepen and the unborn child remains at the centre of the room.

Described as a haunting and tender exploration of family, belief and withheld communication, the play confronts the authority of silence and the weight of what remains unspoken.

The work won the Norwegian Ibsen Award and confirmed Fosse as one of Europe’s most distinctive dramatic voices, now celebrated globally following his Nobel Prize success.

This London premiere is produced by Hornsey-Pennell Productions and offers audiences a rare chance to experience one of Fosse’s major plays in an intimate setting.

Director Simon Usher has previously worked with the National Theatre, Royal Court and in the West End, and has a longstanding relationship with Fosse’s writing.

The cast includes Jasmin Dufa Pitt, Daf Thomas, Valerie Gogan, Tony Bell, Marie Thorseth Molnes and Jan Martin.
