Iain Heggie’s Wiping My Mother’s Arse will return to the stage for the first time in 25 years, opening at Pitlochry Festival Theatre from 15 August to 5 September.
The Fringe First Award-winning play, originally a sold-out hit at the Traverse Theatre in 2001, is revived in a new version as part of Alan Cumming’s inaugural season as Artistic Director, marking the theatre’s 75th anniversary.
At the heart of the story is Andrene, an elderly care home resident, her overworked carer Larry, and her son Derek, who brings his girlfriend to visit only to discover troubling changes that force him to confront difficult truths.
Blending dark humour with emotional depth, the play explores the chaos, comedy and heartbreak of ageing, where everyday life becomes unpredictable and long-buried secrets refuse to stay hidden.
The cast includes Johnny McKnight, Anne Kidd, Lisa Livingstone and David Rankine, bringing together talent recognised across stage and screen.
The production is directed by Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s Deputy Artistic Director Sam Hardie, with design by Jenny Booth, lighting by Michaella Fee and sound and composition by Niroshini Thambar.
Sam Hardie said: “I am thrilled to be directing Iain Heggie’s new version of Wiping My Mother’s Arse. We have such an exciting cast joining the production, many who you’ll recognise from across Scottish stage and screens, as well as a brilliant creative team to bring this funny yet tender story to life. Since its premiere at the Traverse Theatre in 2001, where the production won a Fringe First, Iain has rewritten and developed the story for its outing 25 years later at Pitlochry. It packs lots of laughs for our audiences and has a big heart too.”
The production will run in the Studio space at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, with ticket prices starting from £15.
