Freckle Productions has announced that Zog and the Flying Doctors will return to the stage for a new UK and Ireland tour in 2027 following the success of its previous tour in 2024.
Based on the bestselling book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, the family-friendly production will open at Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch in March 2027 before visiting a further 22 venues across the UK and Ireland, with additional dates still to be announced.
The stage adaptation follows accident-prone dragon Zog, fearless Princess Pearl and Sir Gadabout as they embark on a high-flying adventure, helping creatures in need around the world. Along the way, they encounter a unicorn with too many horns, a sneezy lion and a sunburnt mermaid, while challenging expectations about what a princess can achieve.
Featuring puppetry, playful storytelling and original songs by Joe Stilgoe, the production is presented by Freckle Productions in association with Rose Theatre and Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch.
The story is a sequel to Zog, one of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s most popular creations, which has sold more than 5.5 million copies worldwide. Zog and the Flying Doctors was first published in 2016 and later adapted into an animated BBC One Christmas Day special.
Jennifer Sutherland, Executive Producer at Freckle Productions, said: “We’re so pleased to bring Zog and the Flying Doctors back to the stage in 2027. Zog has become such a special part of what we do at Freckle, and it’s wonderful to see how much these stories mean to families. With more than 80,000 people coming to see Zog this year, we know our audiences can’t wait to find out what Zog and his friends get up to next and can’t wait to take them back out on the road, or should I say the skies, to share their fun-filled adventure with even more little ones.”
The production comes from the team behind stage adaptations including Zog, Stick Man and The Baddies, continuing Freckle Productions’ long-running partnership with the works of Donaldson and Scheffler.
The 2027 tour will visit venues including Liverpool Playhouse, Lowry Salford, Edinburgh Lyceum Theatre, Norwich Theatre Royal and a summer season at London’s Cadogan Hall.
