Following sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Old Red Lion Theatre, the darkly hilarious The Grim arrives at Southwark Playhouse Borough this winter.

Written by award-winning playwright Edmund Morris (You’re Dead Mate, UK Tour), The Grim is a spine-tingling comedy that begins in the world of undertakers and takes a terrifying supernatural turn.

Set in 1964, the story follows Shaun and his superstitious assistant Robert as they prepare the notorious Jackie Gallager for burial. But when the corpse reanimates, the pair must survive a night of chaos and horror.

Audiences can expect a fast-paced, action-packed show that is equal parts hilarious and heart-rending.

The cast features Edmund Morris as Shaun, Louis Davison as Robert, and Harry Carter as Jack.

Director Ben Woodhall said, “This show is a real gift to a director. The clarity of the characters, wit of the dialogue, unexpected twists of the plot and the melding of genres, are all embedded in the writing. It is a real testament to Edmund’s unique and creative voice. Audiences should expect belly laughs, genuine thrills and a show that continually takes you by surprise.”

Writer Edmund Morris added, “To be taking this play to Southwark Playhouse is really special. We knew when we first performed this show at the Edinburgh Fringe that we had a show with legs, but for it to have galloped full-speed into one of London’s most famous theatres a little over a year later is truly astonishing. I can’t wait for The Grim to be unleashed on audiences once more, who I hope are looking forward to exploring the hilarious, horrifying, and high-octane world we have waiting for them.”

The Grim runs from Wednesday 26th November to Saturday 6th December 2025 at Southwark Playhouse Borough.
