The Barn Theatre in Cirencester has announced that Darren Day will star as Sam Phillips in the return of Million Dollar Quartet for an extended summer run.
The production will play at the Barn Theatre from Monday 15 June until Saturday 22 August, with a national press night on Thursday 18 June.
Directed by Jonathan O’Boyle, Million Dollar Quartet features a book by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux and revisits a pivotal moment in music history.
Set on 4 December 1956, the show imagines the night when Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley came together by chance at Sun Records in Memphis, creating a legendary jam session.
As egos collide and ambitions surface, the production brings to life an era-defining soundtrack including Blue Suede Shoes, Fever, Walk The Line and Hound Dog.
Darren Day is best known for his extensive stage career, including leading roles in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Les Misérables, Chicago, Grease, The Rocky Horror Show and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
Iwan Lewis, CEO and Artistic Director of the Barn Theatre, said, “I genuinely couldn’t think of more perfect casting. Sam Phillips is an iconic figure who played such a pivotal role in shaping the music industry, and to have this role played by Darren Day, who has himself taken on some of the most defining roles in musical theatre, feels incredibly fitting. Our audiences at the Barn are in for a real treat.”
Further casting and creative team details are yet to be announced.
