The National Theatre has revealed the full cast for Summerfolk, a new version of Maxim Gorky’s play by Nina Raine and Moses Raine.

Directed by Deputy Artistic Director Robert Hastie, the production opens in the Olivier Theatre on 6 March 2026 and runs until 29 April.

The cast includes Rebecca Banatvala, Thomas Barrett, Tamika Bennett, Pip Carter, Peter Forbes, Brandon Grace, Arthur Hughes, Sam Jenkins-Shaw, Gwyneth Keyworth, Daniel Lapaine, Alex Lawther, Adelle Leonce, Doon Mackichan, Justine Mitchell, Paul Ready, Sophie Rundle, Sid Sagar and Richard Trinder, with Ivan Ivashkin, Aisha-Mae McCormick, Roisin Rae, Ellie Turner and Joe Usher completing the ensemble.

Set in the heat of the Russian summer of 1905, the play follows members of the country’s elite as they retreat to the countryside. Between swimming, sipping champagne and starting affairs, their idyllic escape is overshadowed by Varvara’s fear that their carefree days cannot last.

The creative team includes set and costume designer Peter McKintosh, lighting designer Paul Pyant, sound designer Alexandra Faye Braithwaite, composer Nicola T. Chang, movement director Thomas Herron and Music Director Candida Caldicot. Casting is by Bryony Jarvis-Taylor, with voice coaches Shereen Ibrahim and Zoe Littleton, associate set designer Joseph Bisat Marshall and BSL and staff director Lilac Yosiphon.
